Pilgrimage preparation has an order to it: paperwork first, health requirements second, kit last. Getting the order wrong is what causes the classic failures โ a vaccination certificate issued too close to departure, an Ihram packed in the checked bag, a phone that cannot reach the documents you saved in the cloud. Work through the sections below in order, ticking items off in the checklist above as you go.
Documents to arrange first
Everything else depends on these, and several of them take weeks to obtain. The rule for the whole category: carry originals in one place, photocopies in another, and a scanned set in cloud storage you can reach from a borrowed phone.
- โข Passport with the validity window your visa requires โ renew before you apply rather than during the process.
- โข Hajj or Umrah visa arranged through a licensed operator in your country of departure. Fees and eligibility are set by the Saudi authorities โ confirm them on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs e-Visa portal, not from an agent's summary.
- โข Vaccination certificate for meningococcal ACWY (see the next section) โ this is checked at the point of entry.
- โข Flight tickets and hotel bookings, printed as well as on the phone, with the operator's 24-hour contact number written on the paper copy.
- โข Travel insurance that covers medical treatment and repatriation, and declares any pre-existing conditions you want covered.
- โข Passport photographs โ multiple copies, in the size your operator asks for.
- โข Entry rules for the Kingdom. Keep the current government advice for your nationality, e.g. GOV.UK travel advice for Saudi Arabia, in your bookmarks before departure.
Vaccination and health requirements
Saudi Arabia makes the meningococcal requirement compulsory for pilgrims, and the certificate has to be issued at least ten days before arrival โ which is why this sits at the top of the list rather than in the "before you fly" section. Read the current wording on the official Nusuk Hajj health guidelines page each season, because the requirement window changes.

Ihram: what to pack and what is prohibited

- โข Men: stitched clothing that fits the body, or covering the head
- โข Contracting or proposing marriage

For men the kit is two unstitched white sheets โ one wrapped at the waist, one over the shoulders โ plus an Ihram belt to hold the lower garment. For women, loose clothing that covers the body and does not attract attention, without a face covering or gloves when in Ihram. Pack at least two sets: Ihram gets dusty, and for Hajj you will re-enter it more than once.
Packing list by category
Pack to the itinerary, not to a generic list. The right-hand column marks what only a Hajj trip needs โ if you are travelling for Umrah, you can leave those behind.

The five days of Hajj at a glance
Hajj rituals fall on fixed days of Dhul Hijjah, which is why the itinerary is not flexible. The Quran refers to the counting of these days in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:203. This is a planning overview of where you will physically be โ for rulings, follow your scholar or the guidance issued to your group.

Weather and what it means for your kit
Summer (May โ September)
Extreme heat, commonly 40โ50ยฐC in Makkah

Learn the Talbiyah aloud before you fly โ it is recited constantly, and a printed dua booklet or offline app beats relying on mobile data in the camps.
Final checks the week before you fly
- โข Confirm the vaccination certificate is dated at least ten days before arrival.

- โข Put Ihram, medication and documents in the cabin bag, never the checked bag.
