Why is facing the Qibla important?
Facing the Qibla (direction of the Kaaba) during prayer is a fundamental requirement in Islam. It unifies Muslims worldwide as they all face the same point during worship, symbolizing the unity of the Muslim Ummah. The Quran commands: "Turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. Wherever you are, turn your faces toward it." (2:144)
How accurate is this Qibla finder?
Our Qibla calculator uses precise spherical trigonometry to calculate the great circle direction from your location to the Kaaba (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E). The accuracy depends on your GPS precision. On most modern devices, this is accurate to within 1-2 degrees. For best results, ensure you're in an open area with good GPS signal.
Why does my compass seem off?
Digital compasses can be affected by nearby metal objects, electronic devices, or magnetic interference. To improve accuracy: move away from electronic devices, calibrate your compass by moving your phone in a figure-8 pattern, and hold the phone flat and level. In buildings, compass accuracy may be reduced.
What if I can't determine the exact Qibla?
Islamic scholars agree that facing the general direction of the Qibla is sufficient when the exact direction cannot be determined. The obligation is to face towards the Kaaba, not to face it with absolute precision. Do your best to determine the direction, and your prayer is valid.
Does the Qibla direction change?
The Qibla direction is fixed relative to the Kaaba's location, which doesn't change. However, the angle you face changes based on your location on Earth. Someone in New York faces a different direction than someone in London, but both are facing towards the same point - the Kaaba in Makkah.
